UN Removes Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives voted in favour to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting next week.

Sharaa was named transitional president following his leadership in a rebel offensive that removed Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, concluding over a decade of domestic strife.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" following Assad's ouster.

Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Muslim faction HTS, previously associated with the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations this past July.

More Penalties Removed

Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and allied countries for backing the country and its population."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday comes after US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" working toward stability to the war-torn country.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance at pulling it together".

The pair met on their first occasion this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of the region.

After that meeting, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria until he severed ties in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to the US during this period. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

During his address, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
