Watford Football Club have made the decision to terminate their manager's contract after only five months and 10 matches in charge, announcing the return of ex-manager Javi Gracia as his successor.

Reports suggest that Pezzolano, who was hired in the spring to take over from Tom Cleverley, along with his technical staff, were told not to take practice on midweek as rumors about his imminent departure grew on the previous day.

Pezzolano was called to a meeting where he was named the 11th manager Watford have moved on since the start of 2020.

"We are delighted to reappoint Javi," said the club's chief executive. "His passion, guidance and clear strategy will foster consistency, unity and positive energy.

"We believe there are many supporters who hoped Javi had never departed in 2019. With this talented team, we are convinced his know-how and qualities are precisely what we require now."

Gracia guided Watford to the FA Cup showpiece for the only other occasion in the club's history in that year, but was dismissed a few matches into the following campaign and last managed at Leeds United in 2023.

"For me, the emotion I have in this moment is that I'm returning to a familiar place. It was the most enjoyable period of my professional life," he stated. "I have very good memories and we have unfinished business at Watford. For us, it's a further significant move in our career.

"This is a unique opportunity for us, and at the same time we are highly motivated for this season. If we are united, we are stronger."

Pezzolano's sacking comes even after the team's win against Oxford at their home ground on Saturday, which lifted them to 11th in the Championship after a difficult opening that yielded five points from the first six games.

Pezzolano is reportedly left disappointed by the decision to sack him, having guided the side to a three-match unbeaten run that also included a victory at home over Hull City and a tie at Fratton Park, leaving them within touching distance off the promotion playoffs.

The coach joined shortly after the conclusion of the previous campaign with a proven track record of leading clubs to promotion in Spain, Brazil and his home country.
