The Animated Series' Creator Unveils Alastor and Rosie's Origin Tale Serves as a Huge Season 3 Tease
Devoted fans of the show finally got a long-awaited backstory in the second season's fourth episode, called “It's a Deal.” This installment is likely to prompt extensive conversation and pose many inquiries about the nature of a certain demonic Overlord who seems significantly stronger than anyone previously understood. These fresh disclosures include a look into the mortal existence of a beloved character before his demise and sentence to the underworld.
A Significant Hint for Upcoming Installments
The show's creator shared a secret about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a major tease for season 3. Additionally, she provided more insight into the methodology of designing the mortal forms of her demonic animated characters.
Warning: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback discloses that popular personality Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he established communication with the realm beyond in advance to secure a strong position in Hell. Rosie, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his soul.
This raises the question: In what way is Rosie sufficiently strong to elevate Alastor over all other Sinner Demons?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a much bigger story that involves so much, moving into the third season,” the creator states. “Clearly that is an excellent question: How is she that powerful? The solution could be various factors, but the revelation is in season three. I'm very excited for people to witness it.”
It is uncertain how long the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner often remarks that animated production is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons are undated. Nevertheless, she states withholding on those details is an important part of keeping the second season's focus in the right places.
“The challenge of any agreement with infernal beings, or stories that have mysteries, is providing people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that as we go, and allowing that be gratifying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Mysteries Resolved in The Next Season
The creator assures that season 3 will tackle the queries fans have been posing, such as why Rosie ordered Alastor to disappear for a seven-year period, which diminished his influence in Hell.
“The whole seven years, and the pacts these humans are doing, and everything — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the origin story episode provides a further look into what the main characters of Sinner Demons appeared as as humans, the second after seeing Sir Pentious’ historical human form in the second episode. The creator explains that a lot of thought was put into these character designs.
“The mortal forms of the characters hold great significance,” she notes. “They vary from looking really different from their demon form to seeming almost identical. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with a design that represents the character, as opposed to selecting an option that's historically correct. We leaned toward making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the primary controversy over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘Nobody typically had extended hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we think the silhouette is so important, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we design the mortal forms of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to explore and figure out. I'm excited for fans to see more of what the human forms look like.”
New episodes of Hazbin Hotel the second season are released on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
