Miami Heat and Trail Blazers Claim First Victories Following Recent Detentions
Miami scored eighty-six first-half scores versus the Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA match after guard Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a broad federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the claims.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they put up eighty-six opening half scores to lead Memphis by 39 at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland also won their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver further said an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.
"We investigated the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.
"So, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
