Marvel's Wonder Man Preview Unveils Marvel's Most Self-Referential TV Show Ever
The Marvel studio has heard that viewers could be experiencing some superhero fatigue, so they've decided to include this exact concept into their next superhero show.
That's right, the first preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a meta twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The preview, which premiered on Oct. 10, also quietly moved the Wonder Man launch date later from its original end of 2025 slot into January 2026.
Why another superhero movie? People is tired of superhero content. Why watch them in the theater? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to surprise audiences. To reimagine the whole category of storytelling.
The reporter replies: "Have you considered about casting?"
The trailer then cuts to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the interview on his phone, and the trailer ends.
What We Know About Wonder Man
We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show features Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who transforms into a super-powered being (Wonder Man).
The rest of the cast includes actor Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as DODC agent P. Cleary.
Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Approach
We have limited information about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that Marvel plans to poke some fun at itself.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the studio is all in on self-referential comedy. Will that work without the celebrity appeal of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? We'll have to wait and see.
