Los Angeles Battles Unprecedented High Temperatures Just Days After Major Winter Storm.
Following a week of torrential rains that led to inundation across areas in the city, LA is now seeing unseasonably warm temperatures for late February.
All-Time High Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the temperature soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by meteorologists. This breaks the old record for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was recorded just last year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were highlighted on forecast graphics for the region.
Public Health Warnings
Authorities stated that Friday's weather posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance included:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave anyone unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat comes on the heels of a powerful winter storm that pummeled the state earlier in the week. That storm delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, causing flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Sadly, the severe weather also caused a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead a cooldown will arrive. Readings were forecast to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by Friday night.
Additional areas that hit the 90-degree mark were Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to experience the high eighties.
For the weekend, downtown Los Angeles can expect temperatures in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the following week.
