Exposing Venezuelan Victory Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.

Computer-created graphics purporting to show Nicolás Maduro under arrest after his capture by the US have gained countless of views across the internet.

How AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Rapidly

Initial inauthentic synthetic picture apparently showing him being escorted off a aircraft emerged a brief time later. This image was unpublished by any official government accounts; it was instead posted on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Verification involved Google’s SynthID, determining the picture was created or altered with generative AI.

More synthetic pictures were disseminated in the subsequent period, appearing to show different views of Maduro under guard. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures show they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

SynthID confirms the further images were also produced using generative models.

Real Photo Released but Fabrications Persisted

Donald Trump shared the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. But even after this real photo was published, AI-generated images continued to spread but were updated to include the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics show these altered fabrications were first posted on TikTok by a digital art account. Similarly, SynthID found these further images were generated or edited generative artificial intelligence.

Key Points:

  • Deepfakes spread rapidly after the events of the president's apprehension.
  • The first fake image appeared very quickly on social media.
  • Detection software like Google’s SynthID were used to verify the pictures as AI-generated.
  • Fake images continued to circulate and evolve even after the publication of authentic images.
  • The source of several fakes was traced to social media accounts dedicated to AI art.
