Cameron Norrie secured the most important win of his professional journey by coming back from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win represents Norrie's first ever win over a sitting world number one.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the latest British man in history to overcome a global number one. "Bouncing back from health issues last year, I lost in the initial match of qualies here. I just aimed to appreciate my tennis in the second half of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the biggest win of my career, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and probably the strongest athlete in the world right now."

The British player, ranked 31st in the world, also halted Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 consecutive premier event victories, which represented the top run of performances in the Spanish star's young career.

Match Overview

Alcaraz seemed to be progressing easily to a win at the start as he eased through the initial stanza. Yet, Norrie gradually battled back into the match by executing with improved accuracy and engaging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, demanding points. His unceasing consistency and consistency slowly left its mark.

For much of the battle, the world number one performed well on serve but he struggled badly to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. The rising talent seemed notably uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the best shot in the game for much of this season, producing 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, Norrie presented his opponent so few mistakes, maintaining his consistency, athleticism and depth throughout while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to move forward and play aggressively.

Personal Context

After dealing for an extended period due to a major physical setback and difficulties with his performance, the tennis professional dropped as low as 91st in the rankings this season. After making the last eight at Wimbledon and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 after that, this win further underlines the experienced player's development as he seeks to return to the top 20 and further. Alcaraz, despite his incredible accomplishments, is has not yet master how to deliver his top form indoors.
