Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of unneeded gifts might be viewed as somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 presents received by her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. An exact timeline remains to be announced, although the goal is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds going to a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Collection

These gifts are currently kept in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been sitting unused indefinitely.

The detailed catalog has not yet been made public, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The question focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

An International Array of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Political Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mostly from her own political sphere, with winning over global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a unconventional way to handle the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
