Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at Age 89.
This Oscar-nominated actor Diane Ladd left us at the age of 89.
This star, with filmography spanned Chinatown, died at her home in California’s Ojai. The news was shared in a statement shared by her daughter, Oscar-winning actor her daughter Laura Dern.
Dern, who starred with her mom in several movies such as Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my wonderful hero plus my precious gift of a mother”, stating that she was present as she died.
“She was the most wonderful grandmother, mother, daughter, star, artist along with compassionate soul that felt like a dream come true,” she expressed. “We were lucky to have her. She is now with the angels.”
Initial Roles and Rise to Fame
Her initial acting years included minor parts in television programs like Gunsmoke and that decade featured her performing with Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
That very year, 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s praised film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting brought Ladd her initial Oscar nod as best supporting actress.
Later Decades
In the 1980s, she appeared in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story plus humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in the show Alice, a television series based on her earlier movie.
In the following decade, she received an additional supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her part in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart where she played the mom of her actual daughter Dern’s character. The following year she obtained an additional nod for her role in the film Rambling Rose which also starred Dern.
“This was the film that the late Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she brought us to the UK for a special screening and a party in our honor,” Ladd recalled of Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, and weeping, viewing our performance.”
The 1990s included parts in comedy Cemetery Club bringing her back with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, with John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as Laura Dern’s mom again. Those years also saw her score Emmy nominations for work on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom plus Touched by an Angel.
Partnerships with Her Daughter
She kept appearing alongside her daughter in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White satirical show the program Enlightened. She additionally starred with actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.
Her later TV roles included Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.

Ladd was also a relative of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a great influence throughout my life”.
Back in 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and told her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely after her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.
