A Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground
During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was I would book lodging after getting there, however when I arrived, a big convention was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.
As a visitor from Singapore, I thought the possibility of just sleep at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, does not operate all night. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass those hours in an establishment that was open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the next day, but as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared out of place since a woman spotted me loitering in the city center and inquired if everything was alright. I explained my predicament and without hesitation she suggested I could sleep on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, given that my my interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one stuffed baguettes she had from her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.
Looking back, it’s clear to me what a big chance she accepted as a woman allowing a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. In those days I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she took that chance – but still incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her generosity abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
