2026 Hailed as the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this rise, I performed a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the wave in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a host of unique mechanics.

Several the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
